I just remembered that he did have a 7th boat which he got free! So he gave that one away so that is how he ended up with just six.

This is clearly a hereditary problem. You've correctly identified the motors as being at the root of the trouble. As I understand it this disorder is progressive and moves on to include things like pencils and string. Good luck.
